[…] “The worst thief is he who steals the playtime of children.” – Bill Haywood Newt Gingrich drew plenty of ire when he promoted child labor as a solution to the ‘lack of work ethic’ among America’s youth. Though it shouldn’t be too surprising as this is the same guy who believes we should put mirrors in space and colonize the moon. “the Senators who sent the letter yesterday use the excuse that the regulation will prevent children from working on family farms and therefore undermine the rural way of life. Agribusiness lobbyists, coincidentally, have been saying the exact same thing. And an excuse is really all this is.”

No, actually that’s a fact. Have any of your staff actually worked on a farm? Kids WANT to be involved in what their elders are doing — that’s how they learn. Little ones can help with the animals, planting out, weeding, picking the crop, and on and on… They can’t do it as long as adults, and that’s right and good. Older kids can, and want to help in other ways. You ever heard “Make hay while the sun shines”? You have to get it under cover before the next rain, or it’s ruined for feed. That can lead to some pretty long days…

I completely oppose ‘corporate personhood’– it’s an abomination. Just don’t criminalize legitimate, community-sustaining activity by ACTUAL people in your opposition to it.
