Everyone with a functioning brain watches in horror as the GOP uses every trick in its fat Book of Tricks to wrench US energy policy and practice in the wrong direction –wrong for the economy, wrong for air and water quality, wrong (above all) for the planet. Bone deep hubris. But if President Obama does not take full advantage of the opportunity to explain his veto to the American people –why he is right on this issue and the GOP is wrong– we all lose.

Both of my senators (a Democrat and a Republican) support approving Keystone XL. I keep emailing them explaining all the reasons why it’s a terrible project, including about all the land owners in the Midwest who will have their properties taken over and destroyed through eminent domain. By a foreign company! I’m surprised my Republican senator especially is not outraged by this, but he appears to not even know about it (somehow, despite all my emails pointing it out). Instead, both of my senators reply to my emails by saying they know some people support the project and some oppose it, but they believe that it’s worth it because it will create “thousands of jobs”. Utter hogwash! I know they must know by now that Keystone XL will not in fact “create thousands of jobs”, considering even the president has admitted so, if my many emails informing them of such were somehow not understood. Sometimes I wonder if they even read what I have to say! Guess who’s not going to get my vote next time they’re up for reelection? At the very least, they could form their opinions off of actual facts instead of off long ago debunked claims.

Keystone XL will pump the dirtiest oil south to Gulf refineries, costing more $$ to refine and spewing pollution. Worse, it is not an “infinite” supply and will become uneconomic very soon. Pipeline leaks are common and tempt terrorists, so “accidents” can wipe out whole towns & farms.
