This is pointing in the right direction, but there are still at least 2 elephant in the room. Why are cars falling off the tracks? Even if the cars are improved, derailments can be catastrophic. Many articles have stated that crumbling rail bridges are a big problem. Railroads are the fox in charge of them, and this should change. A strong federal authority should inspect, fine and halt traffic on faulty rails and bridges. Second, there is evidence that railroads save a little on fuel by not having all cars have brakes, so that when the first car brakes, a wave goes through the train with 100 cars of sloshing liquid fuel, helping to cause derailments.
